The Benefits of A Democracy
Definition of democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Democracy helps to minimize the amount of fear within its population. People fear what they do not understand, and regardless of why a person does not understand something (ignorance, lack of exposure, experience, etc.), if they are afraid of it, they will not want it to be a prominent force within their culture. By allowing the affected population to voice and vote for the policies that affect their society, you minimize the amount of fear allowed to exist within that society because people will often vote for what they understand the most about; fear the least.
This is often why people within a democracy will opt to restrict the most freedoms during times of high fear, for instance during times of attack, war, outbreak, natural disaster, etc. When you are afraid of something, you can learn more about it (to where it’s not so scary anymore) and/or you can relinquish freedoms, controls/exposure (to whatever is causing you fear) to a person or organization that you perceive to be more knowledgeable than you. Again, this further demonstrates why a democratic population would elect to forego some of their freedoms and peace during a time of mass-fear.
Many governments and organizations likely know this, thus proliferate fear throughout the media/culture in order to incentivize you to relinquish some of your power (via money, time, etc.). It is more encouraging to see people provide their valuable energy (via money, time, etc.) from a place of love and understanding and wanting to serve because of what they understand; not because they are convinced that if they do not, something “bad” will happen.
The more the government, media, organizations and individuals encourage a spirit of knowledge, understanding and love, the more your democracy will elect to have more individual freedoms provided to it. For example, the more you know and understand about the food in your local grocery store, the less necessary it becomes to require companies and farmers to conduct business a certain way. Those companies and farmers will instead be able to voluntarily provide the products that their educated customers want, if they would like to have a successful business. This spirit of conducting business also encourages companies to be more in-touch with their customers’ wants and lives, encouraging an even more understanding and knowledgeable society.
Within a true democracy, the more you understand, the more you can elect to be free.
